Large Fangfoss Studio Pottery Vase by Gerry Grant – British Stoneware

This substantial studio pottery vase immediately caught my eye for its wonderfully off-centre, sculptural neck. The broad rounded body feels calm and balanced, while the tilted opening gives the piece movement and a distinctly individual character.

Handmade at Fangfoss Pottery by Gerry Grant, the vase has a softly speckled cream glaze with expressive sweeps of smoky blue and earthy brown. The overlapping glazes have created wonderfully fluid, almost painterly markings, ensuring that the surface changes as the vase is viewed from different angles.

Fangfoss Pottery was established near York in 1977. Gerry Grant trained in ceramics at Exeter Art College and worked as a thrower at Honiton Pottery before establishing the studio. Known for strong, functional forms and experimental overlapping glazes, he has worked as a potter for almost fifty years. Fangfoss pieces are individually handmade in stoneware and reduction-fired in a gas kiln, a process that produces their characteristic variations in colour and texture.

The vase carries the impressed Fangfoss Pottery mark to its base.

Its generous scale makes this a strong standalone display piece, although it would also look superb holding a loose arrangement of sculptural branches or dried seed heads.
