Cornwall holds an exceptional place in the history of British studio pottery. Its landscape, artistic communities and long tradition of independent workshops have attracted influential potters while encouraging generations of local makers to develop their own distinctive styles.
The Leach Pottery in St Ives, founded by Bernard Leach and Shōji Hamada, became one of the most important centres of twentieth-century studio ceramics. Its influence can be seen in the functional stoneware, oriental glazes and handmade forms produced by Bernard Leach, David Leach and the many potters who trained or worked within the wider St Ives tradition.
Cornish pottery is not limited to the Leach legacy. Troika Pottery became famous for its highly textured, sculptural ceramics and bold geometric designs. Other collectable Cornish names and studios include Carn Pottery, Celtic Pottery, Tremar Pottery and numerous independent makers working throughout St Ives, Newlyn, Penzance and the wider county.
This collection may include vintage Cornish pottery vases, bowls, jugs, mugs, dishes, sculptural vessels and decorative ceramics. Pieces range from signed studio pottery and recognised factory designs to work by talented regional and lesser-known potters.
