Large Vintage Italian Cello Art Glass Jug – Purple and White

I picked this jug because it is such a bold, sculptural piece. The broad base, dramatically swept rim and enormous clear handle give it real presence, while the soft purple and white colouring stops the design from feeling heavy.

The jug is formed from clear glass with clouds of plum, smoky lilac and white incorporated within the body rather than painted onto its surface. The mottled decoration becomes denser across the wide base before stretching into fine vertical lines through the tall neck. A large clear glass handle has been separately applied to the side.

This piece is attributed to Cello of Italy after comparison with labelled examples sharing the same distinctive form, internal colouring and textured glass finish. No maker’s label or mark remains on this example, so the attribution cannot be stated as absolute.

Likely dating from the latter part of the 20th century, the jug reflects the bold scale, flowing lines and colourful decorative glass associated with Italian interiors of the period. Although jug-shaped, it works best as a sculptural display vase rather than ordinary tableware.

Its size makes it ideal for a sideboard, console table or low shelf where light can pass through the glass and reveal the internal marbling. It is striking enough to display completely on its own.

Condition

Excellent vintage condition with no chips, cracks or other damage.
